SHIPPENSBURG-- Vinny Voorhees (Lakaska/New Hope-Solebury) tossed a three-hit shutout to help lead the Bloomsburg University baseball team to a 1-0 win and a split of its doubleheader with Shippensburg on Friday. The Huskies dropped the opener to the Red Raiders by a score of 5-1.

Voorhees allowed just three singles in game two and worked out of a bases loaded in the fourth. In the seventh, the game ended on a bizarre play when with one out and a runner on first, the batter for Shippensburg struck out for the second out. But on the play the runner was attempting a steal of second. However, the batter fell into the path of Huskies catcher Scott Kacelowicz (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) and the runner was called out ending the game. Overall, Voorhees fanned three and walked three in the game to earn his third win of the year and lower his ERA to 0.37.

Bloomsburg got the only run of the game in the first inning. Tony Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) singled to lead off the bottom of the first and then stole second. After a strikeout, Kevin Ward (Clifton Heights/Monsignor Bonner) followed with an RBI single scoring Donofry with what turned out to be the only run of the game.

In game one the Huskies got on the board first in a near repeat fashion as game two. Donofry singled to lead off the bottom first inning, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a Ward RBI single. Shippensburg rallied back with three runs in the top of the third inning, two of them coming on a Cody Kulp homer. The Red Raiders would go on to score single runs in both the fourth and fifth, while starter Tim Freshour held the Huskies in check giving up just two hits over the final four innings.

Bloomsburg, 9-8, 1-1 in the PSAC East, will play at Shippensburg again on Saturday at 1 p.m.
